In this noisy world, introverts often get asked: "Why are you so quiet?".
The common answer to this would be more silence, maybe a polite smile, but always a heart that is tired of unacceptance.
As an introvert, I absolutely love silence.
Not awkward silences, no. I always bridge them with conversations (or at least I try).
But the kind of silence that envelopes a person as they walk alone in a crowded shopping mall, or jog in a quiet park. Reading a book in the book store aisle, standing while occasionally allowing people to pass. Heck, even eating alone, the apparent "horror of horrors" for people who fear the perception of being a loner.
Sounds familiar?
Throughout the years, I have learned that being alone does not equate to being lonely. In fact, it is independent of whether there are human beings with us. Rather, it is a state of mind. A state of peace attributed to independence from the happiness found in any other form of attachment (except, as a Christian, God).
Introverts, we do not need the world to tell us that something is wrong with us. There are days where we feel super sociable, but most days we prefer to just bask in silence, with our minds whirring from observations of the day. And that is okay.
Let us not be afraid to say that, yes, silence is our friend and we are loving every single moment with it.
